Shish Kabobs & Spiritual Family

My name is Cindy Neptune, and in the fall of 2015, I led a 301 small group for the first time. The group was mainly single moms. When 301 was over, the ladies and I really wanted to stay connected…so God gave us a pretty creative way to do it.

I started a single moms cooking small group.

We picked a night that worked for everyone and began to meet! We met once a month and the moms cooked meals that they could take home and have for the week to come. We also helped with other needs that a mom might have, and we all pitched in to help. It could have been clothes, tires, encouragement…and we always finished our time together by praying for each other.

By the 2nd year, I invited the children to come cook with their moms. Now each mom cooks with their child, and here’s the cool part…we planned the meals around the book, “The Jesus Storybook Bible”. We always read the Bible story together. Last month we did the story about Saul on the road to Damascus and we prepared Greek food. It was so yummy!! We prepared Greek Chicken Shish Kabobs with Pita Bread and Tzatziki Sauce, Hummus with Pita chips, and a Humble Pie.

This month we read the Bible story about Sarah, Abraham, and Isaac. We had a baby shower with blue punch, chicken puffs, fruit tray and cupcakes with a blue chocolate baby bottle.

On the Bible story where Moses parts the Red Sea, we made fish shaped grilled cheese sandwiches with all kinds of cheeses and homemade tomato soup. We also made a snack mix with goldfish:).

Every month, food is prepared and sent home with the moms, so they have meals for the coming days. As this cooking small group has grown, we’re adding new things to serve others. Every year in the month of February we do a service project. In December of last year, we made Gingerbread houses and went caroling, giving the the Gingerbread houses away as we went! The heart of our small group is not just moms and kids cooking together.

It’s about spiritual family and growing in our relationship with God.

Who would’ve thought that our 301 small group would develop into something like this? I’m so glad it did and grateful for the moms that have been part of it and the lives we’re impacting together.
